Don’t get me wrong, I love stupid people. They are generally entertaining, youtube would be a much more boring place without stupid people. In this case we have an idiot that has not only a stupid opinion, he is wrong. If we take a look at the Toronto Municipal Code for bicycle guess what we find?

From 150-1 (Definitions Section) of the Toronto Municipal Code:

VEHICLE — Includes a motor vehicle, trailer, traction engine, farm tractor, road-building machine, bicycle, and any vehicle drawn, propelled or driven by any kind of power, including muscular power, but does not include motorized snow vehicle or a streetcar.

Sounds like a bicycle is a vehicle, sounds like they should be afforded the same rights as cars and buses. Does it really sounds like someone piloting a vehicle deserves it if they are hurt or killed?

Looks like Oregon lawmakers are on a roll this week. A couple days ago they amended their bike laws to take fixed-gear bikes into account with the whole brake vs. brake-less issue. This legislature was also followed up with plans for building two velodromes in the state, today they amended the proposal to add a third velodrome to the plans. Why don’t I live in Oregon, these guys are ruling!

From the article at bikeportland.org.

Today was another great day for cycling in Salem. On Tuesday we made solid progress in fixing an outdated law, and today the velodrome bill (S.B. 926) — which seeks $3.5 million of State Lottery funds to build velodromes — gained not just valuable political support, it also gained one more track.

He also added that this would be “a small investment” that would have “huge economic returns for the state of Oregon” and that “if we can build skateboard parks, we can certainly do this.”

Looks like Oregon got it’s act together and clarified the legality of fixed-gear bicycles, and brakes. Nice to see some sanity in the legal system. I know a couple of couriers in Los Angeles that have gotten tickets for being brakeless recently, lets see if this sanity can work it’s way south. The site oregonlive.com has a good article on the new law, worth a read.

A Senate committee delivered a victory to bicycle messengers and other riders of fixed-gear bikes Tuesday, advancing Senate Bill 729, which would legalize their mode of transportation.

“The bill fixes a little glitch in the law,” said Sen. Jason Atkinson, who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. “The law suggests that you have to have a brake on a bicycle, which makes a lot of common sense, but doesn’t make mechanical sense as it relates to a fixed-gear bicycle.”
