“I can’t support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it’s their own fault at the end of the day.”
Rob Ford - Toronto City Councillor
Don’t get me wrong, I love stupid people. They are generally entertaining, youtube would be a much more boring place without stupid people. In this case we have an idiot that has not only a stupid opinion, he is wrong. If we take a look at the Toronto Municipal Code for bicycle guess what we find?
From 150-1 (Definitions Section) of the Toronto Municipal Code:
VEHICLE — Includes a motor vehicle, trailer, traction engine, farm tractor, road-building machine, bicycle, and any vehicle drawn, propelled or driven by any kind of power, including muscular power, but does not include motorized snow vehicle or a streetcar.
Sounds like a bicycle is a vehicle, sounds like they should be afforded the same rights as cars and buses. Does it really sounds like someone piloting a vehicle deserves it if they are hurt or killed?

I wrote to him:
Dear Councillor Ford,
from a cycling discussion board on the net I heard of your statement in
the Toronto City Council:
“I can’t support bike lanes.”
As a cyclist, I want to express my support for this position of yours.
Bicycles, like other vehicles[1], belong on the carriageway, so there is
no need to build separate bike lanes.
I am pleased to learn that this is your position, too!
Keep up this good work!
Sincerely
Jens Müller

[1] cf. the definition in the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario: “vehicle”
includes a motor vehicle, trailer, traction engine, farm tractor,
road-building machine, bicycle and any vehicle drawn, propelled or
driven by any kind of power, including muscular power, but does not
include a motorized snow vehicle or a street car; (“véhicule”)
